SUGGESTED HOME THEATER SYSTEMS

Worthy gear for your consideration in various price ranges

It's impossible to accurately cover every piece of gear from every manufacturer, so this will force some generalities.

But first let's see what money can buy. Then we'll show you how to get as close as possible to that level of high performance for a lot less!

SPEND $1,000,000+

Just for fun, click on THAT to see what COULD be before you get to what WILL be more likely for folks like us.

SPEND Under $1000

C'mon - that's low. Well, I'd forego the surround sound, the DVD player, and the receiver. I'd shop for a discounted 16x9 HDTV CRT rear projector from a major manufacturer, and use the built in speakers.

(as in all these price points) You will need a way to receive the high def programming - an antenna, cable or satellite.

If that is just out of your reach, I'd try to find a direct view CRT display.

SPEND $1000-$1500

Again, the screen is the big thrill. Go CRT HDTV rear projector. Skip everything else. Add a DVD player if you don't have one. They might even throw a cheap one in to get the sale.

SPEND $1500-$2000

This is probably the hardest one to peg because there are many options to seduce you.

Focus on the display device - the screen first. I'd rather have a $1999 screen than a $1200 one and crappy receiver and speakers that stink. And that's what you RISK. I fear that even given all the advice I am heaping into the site, some folks are simply too trusting and will led down the wrong path by Johnny-Salesman. REMEMBER remember remember - Do your research! Always try for a money back trial period with no return "fees." Especially in bundled cheap receivers and speakers, the specs won't tell you ANYTHING worthwhile - it all comes down to what you hear (and you can't tell in a store.)

So many people walk into a store and ask "is this one any good?" And the guy says, "Yup." And they BUY. I grind my teeth over this! To get true high fidelty sound I think you'll have to spend at least $1000 on your receiver and speakers and that's a stretch. If you can, look at the Epos system below. You probably can't hear it anywhere but it can be ordered online with a 30 day trial from The Audio Advisor.

People don't know any better when it comes to speakers and amplifiers because most haven't heard any better. You KNOW when a picture looks like reality. You aren't as likely to know what sounds like really good sound over speakers.

Cheap receivers and speakers will be harsh, not as smooth, won't play as loud.

SPEND $2000-$3000

I might just go with a CRT rear screen projector again and spend the rest on a good sound system.

SPEND $3000-5000

This is getting interesting. Shop carefully. You might find last year's model display at a great reduction and it'll still wow you if your TV is 10 years old.

Depending on SIZE requirements, you could find a nice DLP or LCD rear projector. Then go for sound. Skip accessories for now. get used to what you bring home before you tweak it with power conditioners or expensive cables.

SPEND $5000-7500

For now, here's a nice - and what I'd call - medium priced - home entertainment theater system.

Suggested system:
Audio: $3139 list Video: $3299 list, alternate: $3699 no stand included

EPOS 5.1 SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM ($1500 list price)

A real value. One word: SWEET. 5 speakers plus powered (internally amplified) subwoofer. Pictures and specs coming. You can buy for less. This is a leap beyond the 'all in one' stuff. Note - I find the Cherry colored veneer too orange. If you can, buy the black. They spent on sound, not the cabinets. In black you don't notice.
